There are many different forms of depression.  Many Americans are affected by depression and they don’t even know it or they are not willing to accept it.  It is estimated that some 14 million Americans are affected by depression.  |It is also estimated that less than a third of those affected will ever seek treatment|Fewer than 4.7 million of those, about 1/3, will seek medical help|Unfortunately only a very small percent, less than 1/3, will go for treatment}.  What are the reasons?  Mental illness is a scary concept, and that’s where depression has been filed.   That label is one people tend to avoid.  People who suffered from mental illness were, at one time in history, ridiculed by society.  When depression became apparent in people they were often sent away to clinics for the mentally ill.  Fortunately times have changed.  But the old stereotypes are still with us.  This influences many Americans to keep their illness to themselves.

Many factors contribute to depression.  It isn’t easy to diagnose.  You have to take into consideration the chemical imbalances in the brain, genetics, biology and even the environment surrounding the individual.  Drugs, alcohol and stress all can play a major role in the development of depression.  These are all factors in causes depression.  In what ways can those who suffer from depression be treated?  Fortunately the treatments and cures are as numerous as depression causes.  These options are generally considered after evaluating the individual afflicted with depression

Many claim they have a cure for depression.  Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist.  Here are some of the factors considered when these options are examined.  Is the treatment proven clinically to be effective for depression?  Does it have an appropriate dose to be effective if a drug or herb?  Has the method been accepted in accordance with high quality control standards?  It’s time to take a look at some of the more accepted cures.

Prescription drugs and psychotherapy, combined, has been a common treatment for many forms of depression.  SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are prescribed to treat depression.  First used in the U.S. In 1988, Prozac has become on of the most common.  Drugs like Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox as well as others are also used.  All of these work.  But side effects are common, including causing more depression.  That is why natural cures are becoming so popular today.  St Johns Wort extract is one herbal cure gaining popularity quickly.  To be effective it must contain around 3-5% hyperforin.  It’s success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects.  As important as it is to find a cure-it is impossible to do so if those who suffer do not seek it. If you think you have depression, or if someone you know shows the signs, visit a doctor.
