A few days of feeling sad or depressed does not mean depression. Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness. According to various reports as many as fifteen million Americans suffer from this disease. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. It’s the mental illness stereotypes, things like the crazy eyed old man, that make people think twice before seeking treatment for depression. Depression gets worse with time. Without treatment it will take over your life. People should pay attention to the signs.
Many things cause depression. Physical and emotional problems, chemical issues, even DNA all play a part. Simple daily life and surroundings are important. It can be caused by stress brought on by even more detrimental factors. Complicated diseases like depression aren’t easy to crack. As well, the human brain and its workings are quite complex. The medical profession is working steadily in an attempt to study the mind and how it works. We know that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. We are learning more every day about how the whole process works. The phrase is “learning is half the battle†and with depression knowledge is power.
Depression can be treated with a host of available medications. Miracle treatments also exist, but many times these are empty claims. You have to be careful to seek medications that have been clinically studied and have been proven to display positive effects in the treatment of depression. Not too long ago people who were considered mentally ill were thrown into asylums, never again to be seen or heard. It’s good to know that’s no longer the case. The anti-depressant Prozac first came into use in the USA in 1988. Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.
Since then a new class of anti-depressants has become popular as well. The SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are all being used to treat depression today. These have limited side effects and have been shown to work. The market is also ripe with herbal medications and treatments. The ingredient in St. John’s Wort extract, heperforin, is present in those that prove every bit as effective as anti-depressant drugs. If this ingredient is used in the proper strength it is effective. Research and information are your friends when it comes to the right medications for depression.
